Have you ever met someone who you know at first glance will be someone significant in your life?
Case in point, my serendipitous meeting with Melissa Dawn. Like any special encounter, we were introduced by a mutual friend while both arriving to the same coffee shop for our own Friday morning meetings. We said hello, exchanged some smiles – and the rest as they say, is history.
Melissa, Life & Business Coach and Founder of CEO of Your Life is like a ray of light on a cloudy day – her presence is not only welcomed, it’s cherished. She blends her spiritual savviness with practical applications, to help people like you and me create lives and heart-centred businesses that we love and that fit with our own unique values. She specializes and thrives on helping people transition from their day jobs to their dream businesses.
Aside from her one-on-one coaching, Melissa also runs CEO of Your Life & Business course online, she’s written an e-book 9 Steps Towards Creating Your Orgasmically Joyful Life & Business, and she also has a book coming out this summer, I Attract What I am.
I gotta tell you, her passion for seeing people succeed is downright inspiring. Melissa is not only warm and genuine, but she’s also one hell of a badass business woman. And let’s just say, I’m totally smitten.

Can you tell us what brought you to what you’re doing today? Did you always know you would be a Life & Business Coach?
No. It all started when I was 14. My school guidance counsellor asked me to take a course to assist her with the students. It felt so natural to me that from that point on, I knew I was meant to help people. I wanted to go into psychology but my father told me that was my motherly instincts and encouraged me to go into business. He told me business was the foundation for everything, which to a large degree, is true. So that’s what I did. And I was successful in business and marketing, but never truly felt fulfilled. After going through a divorce, becoming a single mom and hitting rock bottom, I hired a coach. This turned my life around completely. I reconnected with that need to help people and decided I wanted to help other people turn their lives around.
What does it mean to be the CEO of Your Life?
That you’re living your life, your way. Most of us do things because it’s what our friends, partners, entourage, even society think we should be doing. But when you start asking yourself important questions, like “What do I truly want”, and then take steps to go for it… to me, that’s becoming the CEO of your life. It’s all about being true to you and putting yourself in the driver’s seat.
Who is your ideal client?
I like working with people who are driven and ready to take the steps to change. I love to work with people who want to shine their brightest light and will do whatever it takes to make it happen. I love clients that are open to yoga and meditation because it means that they’re flexible and open to trying new things.
One obstacle I see many people come across is not being clear about what they want. Could you share with us some simple ways to gain clarity?
I always say to imagine you have a magic wand. If that magic wand could make whatever you want possible, what would it create? Because most people only think within a limited frame, a limited mindset, they don’t dare to think of the possibilities. But when you start tapping into a mindset of everything being possible, everything becomes possible.
Do you believe in creating visions?
I don’t believe anything is possible without a vision. Your vision can change as you evolve, but it’s important to at least have an idea of what you’re working towards so you can align everything towards that vision. If you’re not clear on what you truly want from where you stand today, put the question out to the Universe. Ask, for example, “What do I need to do to be on my highest path?” The Universe will guide you, but you need to be open to the possibilities it’s showing you.
If you could offer one tip for anyone who’s currently looking to transition from a day job they don’t love to a business they’re excited to have – what would it be?
First of all, it has to be something you’re absolutely passionate about. Something you would do even if you didn’t get paid. It does take a lot of time and energy to start a business, but if you’re doing something you love, the time passes quickly. If you love what you do and you’re ready to align your business with your values and purpose, you will make more money than in your day job. I love this quote: “97% of the people who quit too soon are employed by the 3% that never gave up”. Decide that you’re going to be in the 3% and remind yourself of that daily.
You currently have a Declutter Your Life Challenge – can you tell us a little more about that?
This quote by Toni Morrison says it all: “If you want to fly, you gotta give up the shit that weighs you down”. Essentially, in order to make room for what you want in your life, you need to remove what is no longer working for you. In this challenge, there are 7 days of actionable steps to help you remove everything that is weighing you down, so you can move forward with what you truly want to create.
The challenge was actually featured on Breakfast Television, and you can try it out for yourself here.
Do you have any resolutions this year? If so, what are they?
To launch my book, “I Attract What I Am”, which will be released this summer. It’s scary because I’m putting out my story, which most people don’t know. But I truly want to help people attract the right people in their life, whether it be a partner, boss or clients, and that’s what this book is all about.
If you could offer one blanket resolution for us this year, what would it be?
To really be honest with yourself. Most people aren’t, and when they are, they’re afraid of acting on their truths. Ask yourself the hard questions. Listen to what your heart’s telling you. Give yourself permission to align your path in the direction of your honest answers.
Describe yourself in one word.
